LONDON ROAD 1. 5253 (East Side) Assembly Room at No 28 (Set back on SE) TL 4814 1486:3/6 II GV 2. C18/C19. Tall timberframed stuccoed assembly room over low coach house. Roof slated and gabled to front (W). Internal gable chimney at rear. S flank wall stucco thickened at lower storey. N flank weatherboarded with some brickwork at lower floor with 2 doors and 15 pane fixed window to bakery. Upper floor reached by straight stair in NW corner. 3 window W front. Tall flush sash window with architrave and 6/6 panes in centre, flanked by 2 lower and narrower sash windows also with 6/6 panes. Drip board over each window. Square window in gable with 4 panes. On Gd floor plank door next N corner with 3 pane fanlight leads to stair and upper floor. Double plank doors next S corner. 7 light fixed window between. Narrow bargeboard to gable carried on 2 purlins to each slope. Interior has moulded nosings and strings to wide stair, moulded dado rail to upper room. Raised and fielded panels to cupboard beside fireplace and C18 Adam style wood and composition fire surround. Tapered panelled pilasters with garlands support composite capitals with Prince of Wales order. Frieze breaks forward over pilasters with oval and ribbon motif. Dentilled bed mould and enriched cyma to cornice shelf. Anthemion frieze with central figure panel of nymphs in arcadian scene with altar. Ceiling obscured. An interesting building illuminating social history.
