The following buildings shall be added:

TL 1406 NE ST ALBANS HOLYWELL HILL (west side) 14/238 Nos 64 and 66 (Pickwick House) II GV

House, now two. C15 altered late C15 or early C16, C17, C18, C19 and C20. Stucco, scored as ashlar, incorporating some timber-framing. Plain tile roof. Brick stacks. 2 storeys with cellars. 3 bays, 2 left bays narrower and incor- porating C15 2-bay open hall with floor inserted late C15 or early C16; right bay probably C17; 2 rear wings, that to No 64 probably C18, that to No 66 probably C17 with C20 additions not of special interest. Roadside elevation: 2 cellar windows; on left of centre. Steps up to part-glazed door (to No 66) with overlight in deep reveal having slightly raised surround and console- bracketed cornice; mid C19 4-pane sash to left and two smaller 4-pane sashes above; an early-mid C19 tripartite window with 12-pane sash flanked by 4-pane sashes to each floor of right bay; ground-floor windows below hoodmoulds. Moulded eaves band. Roof has higher ridge over right bay; truncated stack at left end; stack at left end of right bay. Right return: on left, a late C20 12-pane sash to each floor, that on ground floor with hoodmould; on right of front range a late C20 door in late C18 wooden architrave having pilasters with fluted capitals, frieze, and dentil pediment; fire insurance plaque to left of door; wing has a 12-pane sash to 1st floor and roof hipped at right end. Interior of No 66: late C18 stud and brick partition walls and brick chimney with a fireplace on each floor; large-scanting, close-set, joists of late C15 or early C16 floor visible. On 1st floor exposed timber framing includes large-scantling heavily-jowelled wall posts; studs; long arched braces; central arch-braced collared truss with moulding; moulded tie-beam of right truss carrying larger central post supporting collar, clasped through purlins; arched wind braces; timbers sooted. Rear wing has exposed timber framing; spine-beam with mortices from former attic floor; mostly replaced rafters but 2 old pairs with carpenters marks.
