Railway station and station master's house. 1847-8 for the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company, with later C19 additions to station master's house. Red brick in Flemish bond with ashlar dressings. Tile roof; lead roofs to bay windows. Cast-iron columns and frame to wooden platform awning with glass roof. Jacobethan style. Plan: building stands between two platforms, that to rear now disused; station offices to left, station master's house to right. Main range has central Booking Hall and 2- room cross wing to left containing Waiting Room to front and Ladies Room to rear, with Lord Yarborough's Waiting Room to left end; similar cross wing to right containing station master's rooms, with later addition set back to right and extensions to front. North platform front: single storey with attic and 2 storeys, 8 bays. Central 2-bay Booking Hall, single-bay projecting Waiting Room wing to left and 3-bay Yarborough Waiting Room set back to left end; single-bay projecting wing to right and 2-storey, 2-bay section set back to right with single storey extensions to front. Flush quoins. Booking Hall: recessed panelled door in ashlar surround, 3-light wooden ovolo mullion and transom window to left in chamfered ashlar reveal. Waiting Room wing to left has entrance in right return with triangular- headed half-glazed door in chamfered ashlar reveal; projecting wooden canted bay window with ovolo-mullioned lights in chamfered reveals, plain entablature, cornice and hipped roof; single-light transomed window in ashlar reveal to left return. Yarborough Waiting Room has half-glazed doors to left end in ashlar surround, with 3-light and single-light mullion windows in ashlar reveals to right. Projecting wing to right of Booking Hall has ground floor brick bay window with quoins, 3-light mullion and transom window to front and single-light windows to sides in chamfered ashlar reveals, moulded cornice and hipped roof. Extension to right has wooden cross mullion window in ashlar reveal and ornate bargeboard to right gable. Projecting front wings have single-light ashlar attic windows. Most windows have glazing bars. Platform awning to central section between wings and to left end: pairs of cast-iron columns with octagonal bases and foliate capitals supporting framework with ornate brackets beneath flat roof with wooden fringe; section to right derelict at time of re-survey. Single similar column and bracket for former canopy to right side of right wing. Steeply-pitched roof has decorative ridge tiles and curvilinear coped gables with ornate finials. 4 tall stacks with quoins and octagonal ashlar chimneys with chamfered bases and moulded cornices: 3 axial stacks with one, two and four shafts, and lateral stack to front of right section with three shafts. Left return has canted bay window and attic window similar to Waiting Room wing. Rear, facing former platform and approach from Brocklesby Park: original section to right has central panelled door to Booking Hall flanked by single-light ashlar windows; similar window and gable details to front. Station master's house to left: half-glazed door in keyed round-headed ashlar surround, ground floor casement and first floor 12-pane sashes in chamfered ashlar reveals. Interior: station rooms have moulded plaster cornices, doors and windows in wide architraves, and original chimneypieces, (that to Yarborough Waiting Room particularly ornate). Lord Yarborough was chairman of the MS and LR at the time of this line's construction, and the station was used by visitors to Brocklesby Hall, including royalty. Station rooms empty and in decay at time of re- survey.
