SU60SE MILTON ROAD, Milton 774-1/4/288 (East side) Gate piers and gates, Milton Cemetery

GV II

Gate piers and gates. 1910. By GE Smith. Ashlar stone and iron. Each of the 4 stone piers has deep moulded cornice and base, capped with a metal urn set on elaborate metal sub-structure supported on stone base. Each face of the centre piers has a recessed panel with narrow incised margins; front and rear faces have to lower half a projecting splayed stone face surmounted by stone garland and at top of the recessed panel is a keystone with City of Portsmouth coat of arms and date 1910 inscribed below. The 2 smaller flanking side piers have plain recessed panel to each side with moulded surround. The main 2-leaf centre gates and smaller side gates are in ornate ironwork each hung from wide pierced iron fretted posts. City of Portsmouth coat of arms at centre rail of each side gate.
