2/122 The Church (or vestry) Room - GV II

Church or vestry room, formerly part of a dwelling. Possibly C16 or earlier, refurbished in the early C19, with later modifications. Plastered cob, on stone footings; gabled-end concrete tiled roof. Old photographs show this to have been part of a larger building; it was possibly originally the service end of a 3-room, cross-passage house, although set physically higher than the now demolished hall and inner room. Single storey. Front: 2 round-headed 24-pane hornless sash windows with a round-headed doorway to the left, the door late C20, the fanlight with glazing bars; 3 buttresses. Right- hand end stack with renewed brick shaft. Interior: false ceiling obscures the roof structure which may be ancient. The church room is situated on a prominent central village site.
