1/94 The Shieling - - II

Detached cottage. C17 with later alterations. Roughcast cob on stone footings; hipped thatched roof. Formerly a 2-room plan cottage (originally probably a central through passage), now entered through a C19 extension to the right-hand end which follows the curve of the lane). Old range heated by end stacks, that to the right-hand end originally external, both with brick shafts, that to the right heightened. 2 storeys. Front: 3 window range, with 3-light casement windows to 1st floor, lintels at eaves level; three 4-light casement windows to ground floor. C19 extension with casement window to each floor. Interior one deeply chamfered axial ceiling beam, unstopped. Unchamfered bressumer to take partition between the original 2 rooms, now gone. Complete C17 roof: principals come well down, and rest on uprights (one visible); pegged and morticed at apex of the 3 trusses; collars halved and pegged; all the rafters are pegged onto ridge piece.
