SZ69NE FORT CUMBERLAND ROAD, Eastney 774-1/6/163 Former Officers' Quarters, Fort Cumberland

GV II

Officers' quarters with separate north and south blocks, now offices. c1865. Red brick in Flemish bond. Low pitch Welsh slate roofs, hipped to 1-storey extension at right of south block and to 2-storey extension at left of north block. South block has brick stack on left and to right of centre and north block on right and to left of centre. EXTERIOR: each block 2 storeys and attic, 8 bays. South block has to bay 3 and on far right a half-glazed door with 3-pane overlight set under gauged brick segmental arch. To left of right door are 4 and on left of left door are two 12-pane sashes, each set under a gauged brick segmental arch, stone sill. First floor has 8 similar 12-pane sashes, banded stone cornice and rendered parapet. The attic is recessed behind parapet and has four 6-pane 2-leaf casements set within slate hanging. North block is similar except doors are positioned in far left bay and to right in bay 6. On right of south block is a 1-storey red brick extension with 2 similar 12-pane sashes. Left of north block is a 2-storey extension with 2 ground and first floor 12-pane sashes. Rear elevation is similar but each block has 2 later 2-storey projections each with lean-to slated roof, north block brick, south block stuccoed. INTERIOR not inspected.
