4/132 Gorran's Down - - II

House. Probably later C17 but little evidence for dating survives. Extended in C19. Rendered probably rubble walls with some cob. Thatch roof gabled to right end and hipped to left. 2 brick stacks, one axial and one at right gable end. Plan: original plan unclear owing to the C20 alterations, currently 2 large rooms but may in fact have originated as 2 2-room plan cottages since a central thick wall divides the house adjoining the axial chimneystack. C19 outshuts added along rear wall and at left-hand end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front of late C19 4-pane sashes on the 1st floor and later C20 2-light casements below. C20 gabled porch to right of centre with glazed door. Lean-to outbuilding/store against left-hand end. Interior: exhibits few early features at present although there is evidence that a C17 fireplace may survive at the right-hand end. Roof structure consists of C18 or C19 straight principal rafters.

Images of England

Images of England was a photographic record of every listed building in England, created as a snap shot of listed buildings at the turn of the millennium. These photographs of the exterior of listed buildings were taken by volunteers between 1999 and 2008. The project was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
