ST GILES KINGSCOTT SS 51 NW IN THE WOOD 18/216 Strawberry Cottage - GV II
Cottage, formerly 2 cottages. Probably C18. Plastered stone rubble; maybe with cob; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof. Plan: 5-room plan cottage facing south-east. The left (south-west) end room is end onto the lane and is unheated. Older people in the parish remember this room being used as a shop. There is an axial stack between the next 2 rooms. The room right of centre has an axial stack backing onto the right end room which has a projecting gable-end stack. The cottage has been made by uniting 2 former cottages. 2 storeys. Exterior: Irregular front fenestration with 6 ground floor windows and 4 first floor windows, all C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars. There are 2 front doorways, one near each end. Both contain early C20 part-glazed plank doors behind contemporary gabled porches with trellis sides. The right door and porch are now enclosed within a C20 conservatory. C20 brick quoins on left end corner. The roof is half-hipped to left and gable-ended to right. Interior: The only exposed carpentry is a roughly-finished crossbeam of indeterminate date over the partition between the left 2 rooms. Roof not inspected. Strawberry Cottage is one of an attractive group of listed buildings in the hamlet of Kingscott.
