NORTHLEW NORTHLEW SX 59 NW 9/243 Hillside - GV II

Small house. Mid C17 with C19 additions. Rendered cob and rubble walls. Gable ended thatched roof. Stone stack at each end (both with brick shafts) the left-hand one has a moulded dripcourse. Plan: 2-room plan,originally larger heated room to the left and unheated room to the right. Straight stair in passage may not be a later insertion. Outbuildings at left-hand end originally stable and smithy. C19 outshuts added at front and rear. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1-window front with C19 outshut at centre and C20 glazed porch built against its left-hand side. C20 2-light casement to left on each floor. Lower outbuilding range at left-hand end. Interior: roughly chamfered closely-spaced ceiling beams. Fireplace has dressed stone jambs and a roughly chamfered wooden lintel. Roof consists of collars lapped and pegged onto straight principals - all the timbers are blackened but it is very unlikely to be smoke-blackening.
