BUCKLAND MONACHORUM MILTON COMBE SX 46 NE 3/91 Hams and Water Farmhouse including shippon adjoining to south

GV II

Farmhouse. C17 or earlier, altered in C18 and C19. Colour washed stone rubble walls. Gable ended asbestos slate roof. 2 rendered stone rubble stacks with slate dripcourses, one axial and one at left gable end. 2 room plan, may originally have been 3, to original house with cross passage at centre leading to newel stairs at rear. Left-hand room heated by gable stack, right-hand room has axial stack backing onto passage. The third room at the right- hand end is an addition, possibly replacing an earlier inner room. The house was remodelled internally in C18 and extended by a parallel block along the rear wall in the C19. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5 window front. At the right-hand end of the original part on ground and 1st floor are C19 3-light casements with small panes and H-L hinges. The other windows are circa early C19 12 pane hornless sashes in frames with beaded edges. At centre is C18 6 fielded panel door (the top 2 glazed) under contemporary doorhood with moulded cornice supported on wooden columns. Projecting 1 room addition at right-hand end has C19 3-light casement with small panes on 1st floor and C20 plank door below it. Interior: axial fireplace has had later grate inserted but original heavy wooden lintel is exposed. Wooden newel stairs have been renewed. Several C18 2-fielded panel doors central 1st floor room has one fielded panelled partition. Roof inaccessible at time of survey but substantial feet of straight principal rafters are visible on 1st floor and roof structure likely to be of interest. To include mid C19 shippon attached at left-hand end which is 2 storeys with 3 window front, 1st floor openings have stone arches above.
