5/27 Castle Cottage

GV II

Cottage, probably built for the bailiff or steward of Castle Drogo (q.v). Circa 1930. Probably designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Coursed blocks of massive granite ashlar; granite stack with granite ashlar chimneyshaft; slate roof. Plan: since no close inspection was available at the time of this survey it is not possible to describe the building in much detail. It has a double depth plan with the principal room or rooms in the front and 2 or 3 service rooms to rear all arranged around a single massive central axial stack. The rear rooms project either side behind the front. The main doorway is to the left of the angle between the front and rear sections. Position of stairs not known. Exterior: main front has symmetrical 3-window arrangement of timber casements with glazing bars. Distribution of other windows not known. Porch in angle is open with hipped roof. Main roof is tall, steeply-pitched and hipped both ends on front and rear sections. Interior not inspected. Castle Cottage is part of Lutyens's Castle Drogo scheme.
