Details
UPLOWMAN ST 01 NW 4/179 - Uplowman Primary School including playground walls to the north-east - II
School. Dated 1874. Local red sandstone rubble with cream-coloured limestone ashlar detail and quoins; slate roof. Plan: T-plan building. The main block faces north-east and has a 2-room plan. In the centre In front plan block projects forward. There is a stack in the angle of the wings. In front of the left end there is an entrance porch and lean-to cloak room. It is tall but single storey. Restrained Tudor Gothic style. Exterior: at the left end of the front the gabled porch contains a segmental pointed arch and original plank door. Directly above is a limestone date plaque. The clock room alongside has a small 2-light window with shoulder-headed lights. Elsewhere are tall mullion-and-transom windows and each gable-end of the main block contains a large pointed arch window containing simple Perpendicular tracery and hoodmoulds with block label stops. The gable ends have shaped kneelers and coping. Interior: not inspected. The front playground is enclosed by red sandstone walls. To rear and each side these are relatively tall and built of stone rubble with rustic crenellation along the top. The low front wall is ashlar with limestone coping and includes lower sections are crested with low wrought iron railings. In the centre quadrant walls recess the gateway and there are plain square section gateposts with pyramid caps.
