Details

ST 01 SE UFFCULME COMMERCIAL STREET, Uffculme 4/168 Grantlands II Large house with associated outbuildings, now subdivided into several dwellings. Built 1864-5, architect unrecorded, but probably John Hayward. Random rubble limestone with Beer stone dressings. Gable end tiled roofs. A complex mid- Victorian establishment being both a large house with attendant service buildings and the centre of an extensive agricultural estate, incorporating the farmhouse and bailiff or manager's house, along with stables and servants' accommodation. The interior has been completely remodelled and very little of the original internal lay-out survives. The principal domestic rooms occupy the east facing block with off-centre entrance hall, and main stairs set a little behind and to the right; a long rear wing, bristling with gables and stacks, contained the kitchen and main service rooms; these return to form a low range of accommodation (running parallel to the main house) that connects with the Farm Manager's house. To the rear of all this is a courtyard made up of various freestanding buildings (including stables, barn, and bailiff's house) which creates a self-contained, almost villagey atmosphere. 2 and 3 storeys. Exterior: A typically mid Victorian composition, all the various functional components of the design clearly distinguished one from another, and forming a rugged, markedly asymmetrical set of elevations. The main front of the house, asymmetrical, 3 bays, the outer bays separately gabled, the fenestration varied with a 2-storeyed castellated bay window to the left, the stone windows with transoms, and a single storeyed bay window to the right with two 2-light casement windows above; the central bay, recessed, also gabled, with off-centre porch, and irregularly placed 3-light casement windows. The other main elevations are equally irregular, some stacks corbelled out, all of them tall with Beer stone quoins; another vertical accent is provided by a tall bellcote. Windows of various sizes, mostly with stone surrounds and mullions, some with mullions. A 5-light mullioned window with 2 transoms on the north side marks the principal stairs. Grantlands presents a dramatic and craggy outline towards Commercial Road, and makes an important contribution to the visual quality off Uffculme Village.
