Details

ST 01 SE UFFCULME SMITHINCOTT 4/180 Smithincott Barton 5.4.66 - II Farmhouse, now divided into 2 dwellings. C17, possibly with earlier work. Roughcast rubble with hipped thatched roof. Originally a 3-room, through-passage plan house with an exceptionally long service end to the right of the passage. This could once have been a shippon, but it was not possible to inspect the main range internally. Service end end-stack and an axial stack at the junction of the main range and a higher end front wing, look like very late insertions. Hall heated by rear lateral external stack; another lateral external stack to wing. 2 storeys. Exterior: front: irregular fenestration; 1st floor with two 3-light casement windows, one with 15 leaded panes to outer lights; another window to the extreme right-hand end. 3-light casement window to either side of openwork timber porch; C19 door to passage. A third window to the extreme right, C20 fenestration to wing. Rear: with late additions; C20 casements. Interior: wing only inspected: 4 cross ceiling beams, 2 with deep chamfers and hollow step stops with bar. 2 jointed cruck trusses, halved and pegged at apex, and probably mid to late C17.
