Details

CHAWLEIGH SHOOTING LANE SS 71 SW 2/50 Shooters Cottage - GV II

House, formerly 2 cottages. C17, repaired circa 1983. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone rubble or cob stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof. Originally a pair of 1-room plan cottages facing south-east onto road. Right (north western) room has rear corner stack and left room has end stack. Left room has secondary rubble outshot on end. 2 storeys. Balanced 2-window front of late C19 and circa 1983 casements and pair of central plank doors. First floor left wall collapsed and rebuilt circa 1983. Right first floor window is a half gable with thatch eaves lifting over. Roof is hipped to right and although main block left is gable-ended the thatch continues down over outshot. Interior shows mostly C17 carpentry detail. Both rooms have plainly-finished crossbeams. Both fireplaces are blocked by C20 grates. In left room roof replaced circa 1983 and roof truss is boxed in right cottage although its shape suggests that it might be a jointed cruck truss. Roofspace is inaccessible.
