Details

BRUSHFORD SS 60 NE 3/1 - Abbotsham Farmhouse - II Farmhouse. Probably C17 core, refurbished and enlarged in early C19. Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob or rubble stacks with C20 brick tops; thatch roof. Double depth plan house facing south-east comprising parallel ranges. Front range has 2 rooms with projecting end stacks 1-room either side of entrance lobby and stairs and back range has unheated service room, central cross passage and right (north-eastern) kitchen with projecting rear lateral stack. Secondary outshots across rear. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window front comprising horned 16-pane sashes to left, the rest are 4-pane sashes. Central C20 plank door with contemporary gabled and corrugated asbestos roofed porch. Both roofs are hipped each end. Outshots have corrugated asbestos roof. Interior is largely result of C19 and C20 refurbishments. Only rear service room has exposed beams, 2 crossbeams with roughly-finished soffit-chamfers. All fireplaces blocked by C20 grates. Only rear block roof is accessible and it is made up of C19 king post trusses. Earlier features are probably hidden in front block. Abbotsham is the site of a medieval manor. Source: Devon SMR.
