Details

CHULMLEIGH EAST STREET, (south side), SS 6814 -6914 Chulmleigh 7/57 Sunny Cottage GV II Cottage. Probably C18 or early C19 with with C20 alterations. Rendered stone rubble and cob, right end wall rebuilt in brick. Thatch roof, hipped at right end, stone rubble stack at left end. Plan: 2 room and central passage plan, the left-hand room heated, with straight run C20 staircase to rear of right-hand room, the original staircase was situated in the rear left-hand corner of the left-hand room. C20 single storey kitchen extension to rear of left-hand room. The roof structure and the continuation of the rear cob wall of the cottage to the right of the rebuilt end wall suggests the cottage may have originally extended to the right, although it is possible it relates to a separate occupation. Exterior: 2 storeys. 2 window range. All late C19 or early C20 3 light casements 3 panes per light except ground floor right-hand window replaced in C20. Thatched porch and C20 doorway. Interior: Entirely altered in C20. Probably C18 or early C19 roof structure with straight principals of light scantling and pegged lapped collars.
