Details

CHULMLEIGH EGYPT LANE SS 6814 -6914 7/68 Egypt Cottage - II Cottage. Probably circa 1700. Painted rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof, half-hipped to right end, gable end to left of main range with stone rubble stack heightened in brick and half-hipped thatch roof to former outbuilding attached at left end. Plan: Egypt Cottage is an unusual survival of a single room cottage with direct entrance, staircase and stack at left end. The small lofted former outbuilding added probably in the C19 at left end has been taken in to form part of dwelling in C20, but no other extensions, and few other alterations have been made. Exterior: 2 storeys. Single 3 light casement 2 panes per light on each floor. Former outbuilding at left has small shuttered loft opening. Outbuilding is slightly recessed from the main range and a C20 porch with thatched hipped roof has been added across the angle. Interior: largely unspoilt. Single chamfered cross ceiling beam with hollow step- stops and slightly cambered chamfered fireplace lintel. Dog-leg staircase to left of fireplace. Original floor boards, roof structure with single truss with straight principals and much of the plaster survives. Egypt Cottage is a rare survival of a 1 room plan cottage, probably of the early C18, which has remained particularly unspoilt.
