Details
CHULMLEIGH FORE STREET (west side), SS 6814 - 6914 Chulmleigh 7/75 Rogers Chemist GV II House and shop. Early to mid C19, both remodelled in early C20. Painted rendered stone rubble and some cob. Slate roof, gable ends to 3 storey range to right with brick stack at left end, 2 storey range to left is splayed at left end and has brick stack on left side. Plan: originally 2 dwellings, the left-hand 2-storey range incorporating shop, but the premises have been in single occupation in living memory. The right-hand 3 storey range has a single large room to left with central direct entry, and narrow kitchen to rear, with garage store room to right which has winder staircase in slight projection to rear right-hand corner. 2 storey range to left has shop to left and narrow heated room to right with direct entry and a small room to its rear containing staircase in rear left-hand corner. Exterior: Right-hand range 3 storeys. 3 window range. All 2 paned sashes with margin glazing bars, except first floor right-hand window which has 12 paned sash. 4 panelled door and C19 double doors at right end of two 6 panelled leaves the upper panels glazed. Left-hand range has 3-window range of sashes with margin glazing bars. Shop window incorporating doorway has bracketted entablature, with carved trefoil headed decoration to the pilasters and large 3 paned shop window. Doorway to right has plain pilasters and entablature, and 6 panelled door with overlight. Interior: principally early C20 joinery including main staircase; winder staircase to garage/store room probably C19. King post roof structure.
