Details
CHULMLEIGH SOUTH MOLTON STREET SS 6814-6914 (west side), Chulmleigh 7/97 Fernside 20.2.67 GV II House. Probably C17 core but heavily remodelled and refronted in C18. Painted brick facade with stone rubble cob and lath and plaster to rear. Thatch roof, hipped at right end. Brick shaft to tall rear lateral stack and tall rendered stack with offsets to gable end of rear wing. Plan: single principal room heated by rear lateral stack to right of entrance passage. Stone outshut with stairs running up rear of stack enclosed by gable ended 2-storey rear kitchen wing of 1 room plan with C20 lean-to to rear of passage and extending to left of Devon House (q.v.). C19 and C20 alteratons have obscured the original plan, but a blocked doorway to the upper storey suggests Fernside and Devon House (q.v.) adjoining to left side at the time connected and the shared brick facade suggests they were possibly in single ownership in the C18. Indeed it is possible that the core of the plan of the entire range is C17, Fernside incorporating the parlour end, and Devon House the hall and lower end of a 3 room and through-passage plan, both the principal rooms (ie hall and parlour) being heated by rear lateral stacks. The C18 remodelling thus probably involved the heightening of the range by the addition of the second storey and rebuilding the facades in brick. Exterior: 3 storeys. 2-window range. Early C19 fenestration intact to upper 2 storeys, all 16 paned sashes, those to first storey have slightly cambered brick arches. Brick plat band between first 2 storeys. Ground floor has two 4-paned sashes to right of doorway with C20 4 panelled door, the upper 2 panels glazed. Interior: Largely altered in C20. Slight coving to principal room ceiling. Rear kitchen wing fireplace has timber lintel with diagonally cut stops. Roof structure largely replaced 1986 but C18 trusses with straight principals and pegged lapped collars survive.
