14/53 The Courtyard and 2 houses - adjoining at the right
GV II
Hotel and 2 adjoining houses. Circa early C19 with C20 alterations. Stone rubble with slate roofs ; end stacks to the main block in the centre, left end stack and axial stack to the left hand block, right end stack to the right hand block. Plan: Tall central block flanked by lower-roofed blocks ; the central block with a central carriage entrance. Exterior: 3 storey central block flanked by 2 storey blocks 4:3:3 window front. The left hand block has a front door to left of centre with a rectangular fanlight, flanked by good granite columns with an entablature. C20 glazing, mostly plastic windows but the 3 first floor left hand windows are in original embrasures with segmental stone arches and the first floor right hand window is a reglazing of a late C19/early C20 canted bay with a moulded cornice. Ground floor window left similar to first floor left hand windows ; 2 large C20 windows with glazing bars to right of front door. The middle block is the most important, 3 storeys and 3 irregularly spaced bays. Wide carriage entrance in centre with Tuscan half-columns supporting an entablature with a pulvinated frieze and a moulded cornice. Second floor timber sashes with moulded cases and 4 over 3-pane sashes ; similar 12-pane first floor sashes ; similar 16-pane ground floor right, ground floor left reglazed with a 16- pane plastic sash. The right end block is 2 storeys, 3 windows. The ground floor has 16-pane sashes to left and right and adjacent front doors between the windows. A wide segmental arch with a keystone extends over the left hand window and door. 3 first floor C20 timber 2-light casements. Interior: not inspected but may contain features of interest. This range forms one side of Newton Square.
