5/1 Benshayes Farmhouse -
GV II
Farmhouse. C17 origins with late C18/early C19 remodelling. Whitewashed rendered stone rubble; slate roof, gabled at right end, gabled at ends of wing ; right end stacks end stack and axial stack to wing, all with stone shafts. Plan & Development: L plan with a 2 room plan main range with rear service rooms and a crosswing at the left end. The main range is C17 in origin but the left hand room has been remodelled as an unheated entrance hall containing a late C18/early C19 stair with access to the rear service rooms to left and right of the stair. The crosswing is divided between a kitchen at the front and late C18/early C19 parlour at the rear. Single-storey lean-to on left return of crosswing. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1 + 3 window front with the end of the crosswing to the left. C20 front door into main range to the left; fenestration of C20 3-light timber casements with glazing bars except for iron casement to first floor of crosswing. Interior: C17 features survive in the right hand room : one half and one crossbeam with scroll stops ; large open fireplace with replaced lintel. Roofspace: Not inspected. The farmhouse forms a good group with the farmbuildings and granary. (q.v.).
