5/68 Thorne Farmhouse -
II
Farmhouse. Early C17 or earlier, partly rebuilt at the west (lower) end, possibly in the early C19 when there was some internal refurbishment; the roof has been raised and this may have been carried out at the same time. Cob on stone rubble footings to the rear and east end walls, the front wall masonry (neatly-dressed stone) brought to course to the right (east), stone rubble to the left (west), stone rubble below the eaves on the front elevation; end stacks and rear lateral stack, all with brick shafts. Plan: 3 room and through passage plan, facing south, lower end to the right, hall heated by the rear lateral stack, heated inner room to the right. The front wall appears to be entirely rebuilt, suggesting that the cob walling may predate the C17. The C17 plan form is largely intact although the house has been rebuilt at the lower end giving a lower end kitchen with a rear dairy wing at right angles to it. A projection to the rear of the hall contains a C17 stair and apple loft. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5 window front with a gabled C19 or C20 porch to the through passage to left of centre. A second porch and entrance directly into the right hand room is post 1940s (drawing in the possession of the owner), as is the 3- light casement at the left end, C20 transomed casement lighting the hall; set of early C19 first floor windows, 3 over 6-pane sashes to left and right, 2 over 4-pane sash in the centre. Interior: Surviving exposed C17 carpentry includes a chamfered crossbeam in the hall which has a fine plank and muntin screen at the higher end with a moulded headbeam and moulded muntins, the original doorway to the inner room survives with an C18 2- panel door introduced. The inner room has a chamfered crossbeam with step stops, supported on a corbel on the front wall, and a half-beam, papered-over, against the end wall. Both the hall and inner room fireplaces are C20, probably concealing earlier features. The C17 stair in the projection has turned balusters and a moulded handrail, 2 rooms off the lobby at the top of the stairs have C18 2-panel doors. Roof: Not inspected, principal rafters visible upstairs appear to be straight. All the C17 exposed carpentry and the C19 dado in the passage are grained. An attractive evolved farmhouse with a good interior.
