STOKENHAM SX83NW Well House immediately 10/174 North West of Start Point Lighthouse
GV II
Well House to Start Point Lighthouse (qv). Circa 1836, presumably by James Walker, the engineer who designed the lighthouse. Rendered and painted stone-how-pitched gable-ended roof covered in large slabs of slate. Plan: Small building of rectangular single cell plan with a wide doorway on the east end. The formerly slate-covered catchment area on the ground above to the west supplied the well's water. Exterior: Single storey. The corners, doorway and window openings are chamfered. The wide doorway on the east end has plank double doors. The north side has a small C19 16-pane sash with a hood mould above and large sill. The west end is blind. Interior: Not inspected.
