DITTISHAM THE LEVEL, Thornwell SX8654-SX8754 17/272 Cottage including garden boundary wall and gate immediately east
GV II
Cottage. Circa 1835-40. Rendered stone rubble. Asbestos slate hipped roof. Rendered lateral end stacks with yellow clay lowered pots. Plan: Probably a 2-room plan with a central entrance, the right hand room is heated from a rear lateral stack, the left hand room has an end stack. Situated at right angles to the road which is to the right. On the left end there is a late C20 single storey extension. Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window east front, the centre first floor window is blind. Original 2-light casements with 8 panes per light, in raised rendered surrounds. Central doorway with original 6-pane door and a C20 glazed porch. Similar original casements on the right hand end facing the road, one on each floor. On the opposite left hand end a late C20 flat roofed extension set back. Including garden wall and gate immediately to the east attached to the right hand end of the house, fronting the road. Probably mid C19. Local limestone rubble wall which acts as a retaining wall at the eastern end where the garden is at higher level. At the centre a gateway with a C19 wrought iron gate, its stiles bent over the top rail. Interior: Not inspected but is likely to have original joinery.
