ASHPRINGTON SX85NW TUCKENHAY 6/60 Tuckenhay Bridge

II

Road bridge over a stream known as River Wash. Probably C17 widened in circa early to mid C19. Stone rubble. The old bridge on the south upstream side has a single span segmented arch of finely dressed and chamfered slate voussoirs springing from slate imposts. The parapet and the abutment to the east seem to have been rebuilt when the bridge was widened in early to mid C19 on the north downstream side. This side has a segmented arch with dressed limestone voussoirs springing from vertical jambs. The stone rubble parapets have roughly dressed stone coping and are swept out at the west end; the north parapet continues about 15 metres to the north west. Tuckenhay bridge is not mentioned in Henderson's and Jervoise's 'Old Devon Bridges'.
