Details
ABBEY ROAD 1. 1625 (South East Side) School House Studies at Sherborne School ST 6316 1/6 28.11.50. I GV 2. L-shaped wing of C15 origin restored by R C Carpenter. Includes former Abbey kitchen with projecting chimney at north end of north-south wing; chimney has built into it 4 cusped panels with carvings of symbols of the Evangelists. At west end of north face in west part of large gabled bay, original doorway with 2 small niches above, flanked by small buttresses. Above it, a late medieval 4-light 2-tier window with 4-centred heads to lights; in east part of gable, a splayed bay with moulded cornice and gargoyles and windows of one or two cinquefoiled lights with labels. To east of this, and to west of chimney wing, lower windows transomed. Chimney wing projects north at east end with two window bays in west wall, which also has gable over. East face of block has doorway at left hand end and 3 window bays to north; stone-mullioned windows with gables above upper windows. 2 window bays adjoin east end of chapel with small gables over upper windows. To right hand, wider gabled bay with one 2-light window above and below and, to left hand, a single light window.
The following buildings of Sherborne School surround the greens immediately to the north of the Abbey Church of St Mary and form a group with themselves and with the Abbey Church of St Mary.
