NORTH FAMBRIDGE CHURCH ROAD (south side) North Fambridge Hall

GV II

House. Mainly c.1600, possibly of medieval origin, altered in C19. Timber framed, clad with red brick in Flemish bond, partly painted, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3-bay main range facing N, with axial stack in middle bay. 2-bay crosswing to right, projecting forwards, and single-storey ancillary building roofed with red clay pantiles to right of it. 3-bay crosswing to left, projecting forwards and backwards, with central stack. Angle towers in both angles, the front roof hipped, the rear roof gabled to the side. 2 single-storey lean-to extensions in front of main range, one with a sheet metal roof. C20 flat-roofed single-storey extension to rear of left crosswing. 2 storeys and attic. Scattered fenestration, C19 and C20. Half-glazed door in gabled porch. Left (E) elevation, ground floor, 2 mid-C19 sashes of 8 lights. First floor, 2 similar sashes, and mid-C19 central sash with semi-circular head. Central glazed double doors in simple doorcase with blocked overlight, radial tracery and dentilled semi-elliptical canopy. The left crosswing has 2 ovolo-moulded binding beams, an early C19 recessed cupboard with arched head, and early C19 folding shutters. The main range has chamfered axial beams (one with lamb's tongue stops), plain joists of square and horizontal section, and a large wood-burning hearth reduced for a modern grate. The right crosswing has exposed jowls, chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, plain joists of vertical section, and a clasped purlin roof with arched wind-bracing. RCHM 2.
