TL 40 NW NAZEING BETTS LANE, 3/53 Church of All Saints 20.2.67 I

Parish church. Late C12, mid C15 and partly restored C19. Flint rubble with dressings of clunch and red brick west tower. Red plain tile roofs. Late C12 nave has mid C15 north arcade of four bays with 2 centred arches of 2 moulded orders. The piers each have 4 attached shafts with moulded capitals and bases. Responds with attached half columns. Some chevron ornament of C12. C15 upper door to rood loft with 3 centred head. South wall has C14 window of two tre- foiled ogee lights with a quatrefoil in 2 centred head. Also a C15 window of 3 cinquefoiled lights in a square head, with moulded label and two Cl9 windows, one of which has splays and semi-circular arch of C12. C13 south doorway with 2 centred arch of 2 chamfered orders. C15 north aisle has C15 doorway to rood loft stair with 3 centred head. Two C15 windows in north wall, one part restored with a square head, the other with 2 cinquefoiled lights. C15 north doorway with moulded jambs and 2 centred arch. C15 chancel has C19 east window with C15 splays. C15 window in north wall of 2 cinquefoiled lights with vertical tracery in a 2 centred head. 2 similar windows in south wall. Late C15 south doorway with C19 head. C19 chancel arch. Mid C15 south porch, timber framed with roll moulded cambered beam roof. Original mid C15 door. C19 north vestry. C15 nave roof of 8 bays, arched to collars with roll moulded principals and 4 couples of 7 cants each bay. Simple C15 crownpost roof to north aisle, on sloped tie beams. C15 cross quadrate crownpost roof to chancel. Mid C15 red brick west tower is one of the earliest in the County. Diapering in flared headers. 3 stages with embattled parapet and south-east stair turret. 2 centred tower arch of 3 chamfered orders. West window of 3 cinquefoiled lights in 4 centred head. Second stage has single lights with four centred heads. Bell chamber has 4 windows with 2 four centred lights, in square heads with moulded labels. C13 coffin lids in south porch. C15 door to rood staircase. Octagonal C15 font with quatrefoiled panels enclosing blank shields. Earlier circular stem. C15 piscina with chamfered jambs and segmental pointed head. Early C16 carved bench end. (RCHM 1).
