SHEERING MILL LANE
Mill House
II
House, C17, extended in C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. Four bays aligned north east-south west, aspect south east. Chimney stack at north west side, internal chimney stack at junction of two north east bays, external chimney stack at south west end. Extension to north west, C19/20, forming a T plan and enclosing first stack mentioned above, with one additional axial chimney stack, and C20 jetty at end. Flat roofed single-storey extension in north angle. Two storeys. South east elevation, ground floor, one C20 casement window, one C20 window of four lights including two C17/18 wrought iron casements, six panel-door with top panels glazed under shallow hood, late C18/early C19, one tripartite double-hung sash window of four, twelve and four lights, early C19.
First floor, one C20 window composed of three C17/18 wrought iron casements, with hooked stay to left casement, semicircular friction stay to middle casement, no stay to right casement, and one C20 casement window. Roof hipped at north east. Some framing exposed internally, much altered. Stop-chamfered beams. Clasped purlin roof with curved wind bracing, least altered in south west bay, much rebuilt elsewhere. Three-movement wrought iron cooking crane, C18, fixed to brickwork of hearth at centre of T plan. Three other wrought iron casements, C17/18, on first floor in south west and north east elevations. This house contains many introduced features - the crane, most of the wrought iron casements, which are fitted in C20 frames, some timber, some panelling - and many reproduction features - C20 iron casements and panelling - which confuse the historical evidence.
