University College Hospital Medical School and that part of
the Nurses Home adjacent to the junction of University Street
and Huntley Street Medical School. 1905. By Paul Waterhouse.
Red brick with stone dressings and banded quoining. Slate
roofs. Edwardian Baroque style.
EXTERIOR: entrance front to Gower Street of 3-storey 7-bay
range. Central feature of projecting broken segmental pediment
set on giant order of Ionic pilasters flanking Ionic portico
set into semicircular archway; channelled rustication to
ground floor with keyed flat arches over metal casements;
similar 1st floor windows set in moulded stone architraves
with cornices and central segmental pediments; C20 2nd floor
windows set beneath moulded stone cornice and parapet.
Elevation to University Street terminated by pedimented blocks
with giant orders of Ionic pilasters set on rusticated ground
floor. Central projecting pedimented block with banded
quoining has giant order of Ionic half-columns set on 2
rusticated floors beneath; flat-roofed dormers to roof. Rear
elevation to Huntley Street with channelled rustication to 2
lower floors has dentilled cornice over central entrance bay
with Ionic portico set in cavetto-moulded semicircular arch;
square-headed cavetto-moulded window architraves above 2 bow
windows with Ionic columns.
