Official residences including admiral's house. 1806, probably
by Daniel Alexander (1768-1846); restored after bomb damage.
Plymouth limestone ashlar; dry slate hipped roof with
projecting eaves; 4 round-arched roof dormers; 2 ashlar axial
stacks. Rectangular double-depth plan plus bowed projection to
rear left.
3 storeys plus attic over basement; symmetrical 9-window front
with band over ground floor and with 1st-floor sill band. Flat
arches over late C19 4-pane horned sashes. Central
semicircular-on-plan porch with Tuscan columns and
entablature; glazed curved door and flanking windows between
columns.
INTERIOR: not inspected but said to be of interest.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: low plinth over basement wall surmounted
by wrought-iron railings.
HISTORY: one of two similar blocks of 1806 on the north and
south sides of the Square, which was laid out for officers'
houses on the main axis through the hospital. Stonehouse is of
international importance as a pioneering hospital plan.
Part of an outstanding and complete military hospital complex.
