SP 9436-9536 ASPLEY GUISE CHURCH STREET 5/7 Guise House 23.1.61 GV II* Small country house. Early C18, apparently on site of earlier structure extended C19. Housed the Classical Academy from early C18 until 1845. Red and grey brick laid in header bond, the main elevation in dark vitrified bricks with red dressings. Hipped clay tile roofs. T-plan, main block to E (originally towards Bedford Road) of 2 storeys and attics, with 2 storeyed block projecting to W with 2 span roof. E elevation: 3-bay symmetrical facade, central bay projecting slightly. 1:3:1 flush sashes with glazing bars and gauged brick heads. First floor central window is round-arched, with moulded timber impost bands and keyblock. All other windows are square-headed. First floor windows have simple brick aprons. Central dormer containing Venetian window. Central doorway approached by flight of stone steps. Moulded architrave surround surmounted by pediment hood on console brackets. Part-glazed door. Central bay has open pediment, with surround of round- arched window breaking through into tympanum. moulded brick dentil cornice to eaves level and pediment. Stone coped parapet. C19 2-storeyed block adjoins to RH, of red brick with clay tile roof, and with irregular fenestration. Adjoining this and running eastwards for approximately 40 metres is C18 garden wall of red and grey brick, with pilaster strips at regular intervals. W elevation: less regular, with variety of fenestration, mostly sashes with glazing bars. Doorways to W and E sides of projecting block. Both have panelled doos, W one under flat hood on ornamental cut brackets, E one in ribbed surround with paterae and under flat cornice hood. Stone coped parapets, that to projecting block shaped at ends. Brick dentil eaves cornices. Main block has 2 substantial chimney stacks at junction with projecting block.
