GV II

Formerly large house, now old peoples' home: dated 1872 on weathervane, by John Douglas for Thornycroft Vernon but altered and partly rebuilt in 1907 after fire. English bond orange and yellow brick, red tile roof. Tall clusters of brick stacks with strip pilasters and moulded caps. Neo-Jacobean style, E-plan house. 2 and 3-storey nearly symmetrical 7-bay, west garden front (1:2:1:2:1) stone plinth and bands. Central canted bay window with pyramidal roof. Plain sashes in moulded stone reveals below, stone mullioned windows above. 2 bays to either side have 4-light mullioned and transomed windows below and 3-light mullioned windows under tile hung gables above. End bays are polygonal turrets with pyramidal roofs with lead finials and weathervanes. East entrance front has forward projections, is of 3 storeys and multigabled with strip pilasters in the gables. Projecting central buttressed porch with spire, has 4-centred arched doorcase with carved spandrels and the Vernon arms above. To either side and lighting hall and stairwell are large 4-light mullioned and twin transomed windows with label moulds. Band of Jacobean-style strapwork brickwork around north range. Interior: entry from porch into 2-storey hall with gallery of Jacobean balusters. Room to front has Neo-Classical style ceiling and fireplace. Room to right through large semi-circular headed doorcase with radial glazing bars in the fanlight, is oak panelled with pilasters carved with strapwork carrying the ceiling beams. Mechanical plaster ceiling and deep frieze. Jacobean-style well staircase. To left of hall large room has ceiling divided into 3 panels with plaster running vine borders. Large mahogany fireplace with fluted Ionic columns. South range includes light oak-panelled library. Upstairs of little interest.
