KINTBURY
145/16/10002 KINTBURY HOLT 06-MAR-85 Hamstead Holt House (Formerly listed as: KINTBURY HOLT Kintbury Holt Farm House)
II Farmhouse, late C18 with C20 modifications to main entrance.
MATERIALS: Brick built, part rendered, tile roof.
PLAN: A rectangular building of two-and-a-half storeys with a hipped roof.
EXTERIOR: Principal rendered elevation, to the south-west, of three bays. Central bay of three storeys: the third storey projects above the eaves line and takes the form of a feature gable with parapets and piers. Gable window has a semi-circular head and interlocking glazing bars. Other windows are six-over-six paned sashes with cambered heads and keystones. Main central entrance through a half-glazed door protected by a C20 porch. South-east rendered elevation with flat-headed six-over-six sashes, a verandah to the ground floor and attic dormers and a brick chimney stack. Brick west elevation. North elevation has further sash windows with exposed box frames.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
HISTORY: Hamstead Holt House was built in the late C18. It is shown in the 1877 first edition Ordnance Survey map as belonging to Kentbury Holt Farm, presumably a corruption of Kintbury, but changed its name to Hamstead Holt Farm by the time of the 1900 map. This has caused confusion with the neighbouring farm to the south-east which was known as Holt Farm in 1877 and Kintbury Holt Farm by 1900.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: Hamstead Holt House is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * A handsome late C18 farmhouse which appears relatively unaltered externally.
