THE HOME PARK
The Royal Mausoleum
I
1862-71 by A J Humbert and Professor Gruner of Dresden, to whom initial sketch design is owed. Portland stone ashlar, Romanesque on Greek cross plan with tall octagonal drum, arcaded windows and shallow hipped copper roof. Bowed, lower, arcaded window ambulatories between arms of cross. East portico with three arches giving onto terrace and flight of steps. Two full size bronze angels in front of portico. Ornate lamp standards to base of steps.
Interior has rich Raphaelesque decoration programmed by Gruner. Barrel vaulted arms, giant pilasters to main piers, large statue niches and painted spandrels above arches, oval medallions between tripartite windows of the drum. The sculpture all by Dresden artists: H Baumer, H Hultzsch, G Kuntz and F Rentsch. Paintings/frescoes by N Consoni, J Frank and P Jander.
Large tomb chest monument to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with marble effigies by Baron Marochetti, 1864-8. Other monuments to members of the Royal Family by Boehm, and an Anglo-Saxon group of Victoria and Albert by W Theed the younger.
