Details

WOKINGHAM SHUTE END SU 8068 NE (South side) 17/14 No,10 (Shute End House) 12.11.51 II* Town house. Older house, probably C17, rebuilt and refronted late C18, altered C19. Service wing on west added c1830, now subdivided as No.lOA and listed separately (17/15). Brick, slate hipped roof. Central staircase plan with rear extensions. 3 storeys and cellar. Flanking chimneys. 5 bay front. Chamfered plinth, moulded brick strings at first and second floor levels; flat eaves on pairs of brackets. Segmental headed windows on ground and first floors, with rubbed brick arches; scrolls on 1:3:5 bays on second floor. All windows have glazing bars, architrave frames and stone cills. Central 6-panelled entrance door, 3-pane rectangular fanlight, architrave surround, and doorcase of Doric fluted pilasters with dentilled cornice and segmental pediment. Small terrace with stone capped retaining wall and 4 concrete steps. Interior:- stairs with stick balusters and wreathed handrail. Early C19 fireplaces in kitchen and study inserted in older fireplace, with flanking glazed tiles with floral motif. Similar fireplaces in former nursery and front bedroom on 3rd floor, and in rear bedrooms late C19 with 'art nouveau' tiles.
