Details
TRENT ST 5818-5918 RIGG LANE (east side) 18/190 Orchard Corner GV II Detached farmhouse of early to mid-C19 date, constructed of coursed rubble limestone walls with ashlar quoins and clay-tile roof with stone gable coping. Extensions to the rear are constructed of brick with slate roofs. The house is of two storeys and is L-shaped in plan with later single- and double-storey infill to inner corner.
EXTERIOR: Three bay front elevation with a central doorway, now masked by a large late-C20 conservatory which is not of special interest. The wooden casements with glazing bars and wood mullions described during original survey (early 1980s) have been replaced with uPVC windows but retain their wooden cills and lintels. The returns have wooden casements. That to the right (west) has a blocked doorway with wooden lintel at ground floor and a C19 casement window with glazing bars to the first floor. The stone stacks at each gable end have projecting cornices. The rear is constructed of brick, with a late C19 two storey extension parallel to the main range and single storey outshuts along the west range, that to the very north is a late-C20 extension. The wooden casements in the later C19 extension are under cambered heads.
INTERIOR: The house retains doors, joinery, cupboards to first floor rooms and flagstone floor at ground floor. The ground floor reception rooms have panelled shutters and that to the east has matchboarding to dado level. The stone fire surrounds in these rooms and that to the rear are later replacements. To the rear a former external window is now enclosed within the C20 extension. The bifurcated stair to the right of the entrance has turned newel post, and leads to the two front first floor rooms. These retain cupboards and original doors, as do the rooms to the rear and in the late-C19 extension. The rear room has a small plank door giving access to a narrow wooden staircase to the kitchen.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION DECISION: Orchard Corner is listed Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* It is a substantially intact example of an early C19 farmhouse which despite some alteration retains much of its original fabric. * Built in vernacular style using of local materials and showing some quality and architectural pretension. * Good survival of interior features and unaltered plan form. * Group value with numerous listed buildings in the village which date from the quality tradition in this village of many designated houses dating from C15 - C19.
