TOLLESBURY HIGH STREET TL 9410-9510 (south side) 8/27 The King's Head Public House GV II
House. C17 and C18, now a public house. Timber framed, mainly plastered with some imitation framing, some weatherboarding, and some red brick cladding in Flemish bond, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. C17 4-bay range facing N, with one external stack to rear and one at right end. From the left end an early C18 range extends backwards, facing Church Street, with one external stack to rear, and an C18/early C19 range to rear of it, with end stack, the whole forming a half-H plan. C19 and C20 single-storey lean-to extensions within the courtyard, and to right of main range. 2 storeys and attics. In the early C20 the corner was chamfered off and the N and E elevations re-styled. N elevation, ground floor, 2 early C20 casements, one C18 splayed bay with early C20 sashes. First floor, 3 early C20 sashes. Attic, 2 C20 casements in gabled dormers. The ground floor is clad with red brick, the first floor is plastered with exposed imitation framing. Gambrel roof. At left corner, early C20 square brick pinnacle with pyramidal roof. E elevation (to Church Street), similar facade treatment. Ground floor, 4 early C20 casements. First floor, 4 early C20 sashes. Attic, 3 C20 casements in lean-to dormers. Gambrel roof, half-hipped at the left end. The interior of the N range has chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops at both storeys, plain joists of vertical section, and jowled posts. The roof was rebuilt as a gambrel in the C18. The E range has chamfered transverse beams with lamb's tongue stops above the upper storey.
