FOUNTAIN STREET The Fountain

(Formerly listed under Market Street)

Dated 1862. Hexagonal drinking fountain with crocketted spirelet capped by poppyhead. Cusped arch with triangular head to each face, pink granite columns with carved foliate capitals. Three faces blind with texts, a valediction and "This fountain was erected in 1862 as a memorial of the late William Smith Esquire of this village by those who admired his character and deplored his removal from them by a sudden death September 29 1861 at the age of 53 years". The valediction refers to Mr Smith as "an honest lawyer". (Previously relocated to Old Market, now returned to original position)
