The Lychgate at Kirkley Cemetery

Lychgate. 1880. By JL Clemence. Random stone with stone dressings and timber framing with plain-tile pyramidal roof. Arts and Crafts style. Square plan, the stone walls either side the carriage way having returns, those towards the centre forming a gateway on the London Road side, the others forming the springing point for curved braces. Above the walls rises an elaborate timber-framed superstructure, some of the square panels filled by fretted woodwork either simple panel tracery or quatrefoils. Roof is surmounted by bellcote. Forms a group with North Eastern and South Western Chapels (qv). A large and elaborate lychgate.
