Alternatively known as: Woodways, No. 46 ABBOTSWOOD Abbotswood House. Designed by Alfred Claude Burlingham in 1913. Arts and Crafts style. Rendered on brick plinth with some decorative timberframing and tiled roofs with tall brick chimneystacks, some set diagonally. L-shaped plan of two storeys and attics with irregular fenestration of wooden casements with leaded lights. Entrance front has left side gable with pattern of herringbone decorative bracing and two storey seven-light bay with chimneystack with stacks set diagonally and projecting one storey room to left. Set back gable to right of large front gable has tall staircase window and herringbone brick porch. Right hand wing of four bays has hipped roof with two hipped dormers and quatrefoil timberframed pattern to base of first floor. Continuous jetty. Return has some vertical studding and later C20 aluminium door at fast floor level approached up wooden stairs. Left side elevation has two gables, the right hand one of herringbone brick with timber sleeping platform later glazed in and stone seven light bay to galleried hall. Left hand gable has attic casement with wreath moulding below, five-light first floor window and four-light square bay to ground floor. Rear elevation has three windows including five-light square bay to Drawing Room. Very complete interior includes central galleried staircase hall with crownpost-type roof with ogee braces, plank and muntin panelling, curved stone fireplace with Tudor rose and lined with Delft tiles and straight flight staircase with twisted balusters. Dining Room has fireplace with wooden surround, tiles and windowseat. Study has tiled fireplace. Drawing room has fireplace with tiles and overmantel, early C18 type panelling and plaster ceiling with square motifs with oak leaves and cockatiels and six triangular panels with floral motifs. The service end is particularly complete with original cast iron range, built-in dresser, scullery with draining boards and cupboards, original pantries and coalholes and servant's staircase with square bannisters. First floor bedrooms retain original fireplaces with tiled surrounds and original doors and bathrooms retain tiling and some original fittings. Cast iron fireplace to attic. Ceiling ventilation system. The land was purchased from the Earl of Onslow in 1908/9 to form Abbotswood but the planning permission was applied for in November 1913. Woodways was the most considerable of the houses designed by Burlingham.
