16/206 The Old Rectory (formerly listed as 26.1.56 The Rectory)

- II

Former rectory, divided into 2 units c1960 and now one private house. Early C17 origin, largely reconstructed c1767. Walls mainly of brick, with burnt headers but some original rubble stone walls survive at the rear - part plastered. Concrete tile roof, replacing thatch, with coped gables. 2 brick stacks on ridge of centre range, and on outer slopes of the wings. U shaped plan, with centre recessed section with flush gable, and projecting gabled wings each end. 2 storeys and attic. In centre, original entrance now part blocked internally, has part glazed door in classical surround with Ionic pilasters supporting entablature with pulvinated frieze, dentil cornice and pediment. Flanking this, on ground floor, one inserted sash with glazing bars each side. On first floor a Venetian window with sashes with glazing bars and gauged arch with keystone. Circular window in attic over. In left gable, ground floor has a tripartite sash with glazing bars (possibly replacing Venetian window). First floor has a Venetian window as in centre. Attic has one casement with diamond lead lights. At left end a lean-to extension with garage doors. The right gable has Venetian windows on ground and first floors. Attic has one casement with glazing bars. The rear wall very thick - possibly a refacing on remains of older building. One stone mullioned window in left end wall. Internally, much original work of very high standard has survived the division into 2 units, in spite of inserted partitions. Cut string stair with turned balusters, moulded and wreathed handrail and carved spandrel brackets. Enriched ceiling to stair hall on ground and first floors. Several rooms have enriched moulded cornices, carved C18 fireplace surrounds, panelled doors with eared architraves. Internal panelled arches, with shutters, to Venetian windows. Metope friezes with shields, over original front and rear doors. At rear of stair hall the site of a spiral stair - the lower flight gone, the upper flight reconstructed. A house of high quality.
