BELMONT BROOMSIDE LANE NZ 34 SW (South side) 7/12 Old School 16/10/75 Community Centre and house attached GV II (formerly listed as Belmont Controlled Church of England School)

Parish school and house attached, now community centre. 1870 by Austin and Johnson. Coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and rock-faced quoins; Welsh slate roof with red-moulded ridge tiles. L-plan school with T-plan house, forming 3 ranges round yard facing road. Medieval style. One-storey, 3-bay central block with one-bay projection at left; right projection is left bay of 2-bay house, with second bay set back at right; porch in angle with second bay.

School has 3 wide windows in main block,with projecting lugged surrounds; left wing has front gable over large 2-centred-arched stone mullioned-and- transomed window, with 4 ogee-headed lights in hollow moulded surround. Pent inner extension on inner return of left wing has similar-style 2-light square window in front, door and window on inner return and roof hipped at front. Steeply-pitched roof.

House has chamfered stone mullions to 4-light window under 2-light window, and top slit in front gable peak; shouldered stone surround to door in full- height porch at right. Left inner return to yard has single light.

Steeply-pitched roof has steeply-coped transverse chimneys, one on left wing slope towards central yard,and one behind the house front gable.

School right return gable has large window, with 3 ogee-headed lights, under gabled bellcote.
