SHINCLIFFE SHINCLIFFE LANE NZ 34 SW and NZ 3041 (South side, off) 3/101 and 12/101 Whitwell Grange 18/2/83 House (formerly listed in Whitwell House C.P.) GV II
Farmhouse, now private house. Mid-late C18 with c.1820 addition. Coursed rubble; added range has incised render and stone dressings on front and returns. Welsh slate roofs with rebuilt brick chimney stacks. L-plan: original house at right-angles on left rear of added range. 2-storey, 3-bay c.1820 range has chamfered plinth and raised-and-chamfered quoins. 4-panel double doors in central doorcase. Margined sashes in raised surrounds with projecting sills. Low-pitched hipped roof with central rendered stack. Deep one-bay returns with identical fenestration. Lower 2-storey, 3-bay C18 farmhouse has roughly-squared quoins at left. Central late C19 gabled porch with replaced door. Blocked window above door and flanking margined sashes with wedge lintels and projecting sills. Roof with left end stack. Added one-storey outshut under pent roof on rear of original house. Interior: C18 house has fielded 6-panel doors and a late C18 cast-iron fire grate in bedroom; added house has 4-panel doors, panelled window shutters and a dogleg staircase with ornamental cast-iron balusters. L-plan range of former farmbuildings, now a house (The Mews), on left return of C18 farmhouse, is altered and not of special interest.
