Details
SOUTH BEDBURN HOWLEA LANE NZ 13 SW (East side) 11/167 Low Burnlea GV II House and barn, now 2 houses. Probably early C17, perhaps re-using earlier crucks, with C20 alterations. Sandstone rubble with boulder plinth; roof of C20 pantiles. Gable-entry plan. House 2 storeys, 3 bays; barn one high storey, 3 bays attached at right, with lower one-storey, one-bay right extension.
House has 3-light C20 windows with glazing bars, concrete sills and lintels, in outer bays; central bay blank. Similar 2-light window in centre of barn. Steeply-pitched house roof has 2 renewed end chimneys.
Interior of house shows beams, with ogee-stopped chamfers to floor joists in left half of single ground-floor room, and no joists in right half. 2 pairs of large crucks, those on rear wall rising from c.1.5 metres above ground level; roof shows large pegged extended collars, with through purlins resting on ends; and small collar at apex beneath renewed ridge set between tops of blades.
Rebuilt one-storey left extension, and C20 front porch not of interest.
