House, now 2 dwellings. Early C18. Stone, rendered and partly whitewashed, with cut dressings; graduated stone slate roof.
2 storeys, 5 bays. Raised quoins, except at right lower wall. Second bay from right 6-panelled door; C2O casements (except for 2 sashes, lost glazing bars); all openings in old architraves. Coped gables on moulded kneelers; stepped-and-corniced end and ridge stacks. Right return shows blocked lst- floor door with timber lintel, and small blocked attic window. Left return shows door to Startforth House West. Rear outshut with various windows, one in older blocked doorway with irregular-block surround.
Interior: Startforth House East living room has fielded-panel shutters, moulded window surrounds and domed cupboard with fluted pilasters and archivolt. Large segmental fireplace in dining room now plastered over.
Historical note: From the mid C18 to the mid C19 the house was a boarding school for boys.
