4/7 Barforth Hall with attached outbuilding 12.1.67 to north-east
GV II*
Manor house. Late medieval, altered early C19 and mid C20. Stone, pebble- dashed and colour-washed, with cut dressings. C20 grey tile roof except for stone slabs on north-east wing and pantiles on outbuilding. Ranges around rectangular courtyard; west range demolished in early C19.
North elevation: main part 2 storeys, 3 bays. Central 4-centred carriage arch of 2 moulded orders on semi-octagonal responds with moulded capitals; hollow- chamfered hood. Window of 5 elliptical-arched lights above. Gabled left bay has three C20 casements with 2 renewed 4-pane sashes over. Right bay has 8- pane Yorkshire sash to left of pent outbuilding with 2 boarded doors; boarded door and lead-latticed casement on left return. Far left single-storey 2-bay extension with boarded door and C20 casement and 2 reset windows, each of 2 round-arched lights,on the left return. East elevation shows projecting stepped lateral stack, and various windows. Later openings on south front; door in cross-passage postion.
Elevations to courtyard: North: double-chamfered carriage arch, and two old 3- light windows above. South range shows old studded door in hollow-chamfered flat-pointed arch in square frame, with hoodmould. Renewed 12-pane sash and old 3-light window above; large projecting stepped stack to right.
Interior: largely remodelled C20. North room of east range has heavy chamfered ceiling beams and joists with broach stops; south room has similar beams and joists with hollow-chamfered stops; mortices and grooves show former partition and door positions. Old door in south range has remains of leather hinges, and drawbar. Original roof trusses mostly of principal-rafter type, but three are closed king-post trusses with herringbone studding, lath and daub infill. In south-east gable a blocked window of 3 round-headed lights, concealed externally.
