GV II*
Planned farm with folly screen. Mid-C18 by J. Paine, incorporating medieval masonry with carved Bull emblem from demolished barbican of Raby Castle. Screen of varied sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings on plinth of dark rounded stones; farm buildings coursed squared sandstone, parts rendered and parts limewashed, with ashlar quoins and dressings. Stone coping to folly; farmhouse roof pantiled with stone-flagged eaves; Welsh slate and concrete, tiles on other buildings; brick and stone chimneys. Rubble walls. U-plan; Gothic style folly. 2 ranges of houses, cottages and farm buildings linked by screen at east end facing Raby Castle. Screen symmetrical, with high segmental archway in battered projecting low-gabled centre; cross loops either side of arch under string, which continues as parapet band to flanking walls with higher central triangular projections. Outer ends of walls abut gable ends of ranges of farm buildings, which have late C19 sashes in canted sides, and high blocked 2-centred arches under eaves band. Screen embattled between these gables.
Left return has one house; right return a long range of farm buildings and cottages, which originally was linked to long central range of farm house and cottages, with east gable c.10 metres behind central arch of screen. West end of this now interrrupted, but layout of farm essentially survives in form noted by Arthur Young, with rubble wall on south.
